Abstract

Background: Adolescence is the period between childhood and maturity. Pregnancy and childbirth at this age are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mother and infant. This directly affects the physical and mental health of the pregnant woman and the fetus while also limiting the woman's future education and career opportunities. Objectives: To describe characteristics and obstetric outcomes in adolescent pregnancies at Can Tho Central General Hospital in 2022-2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 321 cases of pregnant women from 10 to 19 years old hospitalized and monitored at Can Tho Central General Hospital. Results: The average age was 17.8±1.3. The rate of unwanted pregnancies among adolescents was 85%. Gestational diabetes mellitus was the most prevalent condition, affecting 2.5% of all documented pregnancy-related pathologies. The cesarean section rate was 43.6%. Premature birth rate was 12.5%. The average weight of newborns was 2918 ± 438.1 grams, the proportion of children weighing less than 2500 grams was 12.1% and infants admission to the neonatal unit are 4.3%. The risks of premature birth, low birth weight, neonatal delivery, and cesarean section rate increase related to maternal age with p < 0.05. Conclusion: Adolescent pregnancy was associated with early marriage, unwanted pregnancy, lack of contraceptive, increased rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and admission to neonatal unit. Gestational diabetes mellitus was a common condition during pregnancy. Most pregnant adolescents had at least one adverse outcome.
