Abstract

Background: Inguinal hernia is a common surgical condition in countries around the world as well as in Vietnam, especially among the elderly. Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is performed more and more nowadays because it has many outstanding advantages. Objectives: 1. To describe some clinical features of inguinal hernia in elderly patients; 2. To evaluate the results of laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal repair using mesh to treat inguinal hernia in elderly patients. Materials and methods: Non-control clinical intervention study on 71 patients diagnosed with inguinal hernia undergoing laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal using mesh, evaluating the results after 30 days follow up at Can Tho General Hospital from June 2023 to March 2024. Results: The average age was 69.97 ± 8.84 years old, patients 60-69 years old accounted for the majority 60.6%, male accounted for 97.2%. Unilateral accounted for 52.1 % and 47.9 % with bilateral inguinal hernia. Indirect inguinal hernia 47.6%, direct 25.7%, mixed 26.7%. The average surgery time was 56.9 ± 22.01 minutes; The level of pain after surgery was low, the average VAS score after surgery 24 hours was 3.87 ± 0.88 points and after 48 hours was 2.5 ± 0.98 points. The average postoperative hospital stay was 2.7 ± 1.19 days. The results 7 days after surgery and 30 days after surgery were both good and pretty good. Conclusion: Laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal repair using mesh is a safe, effective, and feasible method in inguinal hernia in elderly patients.
