Abstract

Background: Thyroglossal cyst is the most popular congenital malformation of the neck, due to an incomplete involution of the thyroglossal duct connecting the base of the tongue to the thyroid. Objectives: To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics and to evaluate of the effectiveness of Sistrunk procedure on patients with thyroglossal cyst. Materials and methods: A descriptive crosssectional study, prospective design with clinical interventions on 38 cases of thyroglossal duct cyst were doing Sistrunk procedure at Can Tho Children’s Hospital and Can Tho Oncology Hospital from June 2022 to April 2024. Results: Thyroglossal cyst was more popular in men than women (60.5%), primarily in patients ≥ 41 years old (47.4%). The patient's duration of illness was usually 1-5 years (57.9%). Thyroglossal cyst was typically asymptomatic (94.8%), the cyst moveable along with rhythm swallow (100%). The position of cyst was merely in the anterior midline of the neck (86.85%) and above thyroglossal membrane (57.9%). The cysts were usually 1–30 mm in diameter (71.1%). Histopathological characteristics: Nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (52.6%). The postoperative complications of Sistrunk procedure (7.9%) were mainly wound infection and hematoma. The recurrence rate was 0%. The average hospital stay after surgery was 3.1 ± 1.5 days. Conclusions: Thyroglossal cyst is more popular in men. Most patients are asymptomatic. The cyst is largely in the anterior midline of the neck and displays movement with rhythm swallow. Evaluation of effectiveness of Sistrunk's procedure: Low rates of complications (7.9%). There were recurrences in our study. The average hospital stay after surgery is relatively short (3.1 ± 1.5 days).
