Abstract

Background: Herpes zoster is an acute cutaneous infection caused by the reactivation of the Varicella zoster virus (VZV) latent in the nerve ganglia, impacting negatively the anxiety status of patients. Describing the clinical features and anxiety status in Herpes zoster patients helps doctors manage this disease well. Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics of herpes zoster and the level of anxiety in herpes zoster patients using Medlo for Herpes zoster treatment from 2022 to 2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 43 herpes zoster patients presenting at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and FOB international cosmetic dermatology institute from 2022 to 2024. Results: Among the 43 patients included in the study, females accounted for 55.8%. The mean age was 57.6±17.83 years. The average duration of illness was 3.7±0.89 days. Vesicular and erythematous lesions were the most common, at 97.7% and 93%, respectively. The mean percentage of affected skin area was 1.86±0.86, with the majority of patients having ≤2% affected area being at 79.1%. The average pain score on the VAS was 4.9±1.63. The mean anxiety score on the GAD-7 scale was 5.65±3.01, with 60.5% of patients experiencing anxiety, with the highest proportion in the mild anxiety group at 48.8%. Conclusions: Among the 43 shingles patients studied, erythematous and vesicular lesions were the most common manifestations, at 97.7% and 93%, respectively. The mean anxiety score on the GAD-7 scale was 5.65±3.01, with 60.5% of shingles patients experiencing anxiety, mild anxiety group accounts for the highest proportion at 48.8%.
