THE CURRENT SITUATION OF USING DISPOSABLE PLASTIC PRODUCTS AND SOME RELATED FACTORS AMONG RESIDENTS IN O MON DISTRICT, CAN THO CITY IN 2023

Abstract

Background: The popularity of using disposable plastic products in daily life has increased, the amount of plastic pollution we create is set to double by 2030. It will cause a lot of environmental problems and many potential health risks. Objectives: To evaluate the situation of using disposable plastic products and some related factors among people in O Mon district, Can Tho City in 2023. Materials and methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted on 602 people living in Can Tho city using a set of pre-prepared questionnaires. Results: The disposable plastic products that were used the most were plastic bags (96.2%). The reasons for using disposable plastic products were compact and convenient (71.3%), popular, easy to find (48.3%) and cheap (38.7%). There were 15.1% of people have been re-using their disposable plastic items. People with correct practice using disposable plastic products accounted for 34.9%. Factors affecting practice include: education, concerns about using disposable plastic products and garbage collection area (p≤0.05). Conclusion: People's correct practice of using disposable plastic products was not high. Raising people's awareness about the harmful effects of plastic and plastic waste management contributes to reducing plastic pollution.
