DEMAND AND WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR PRENATAL SCREENING AMONG WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE IN THUA THIEN HUE PROVINCE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Prenatal screening helps identify birth defects or medical problems during pregnancy, helping pregnant women and their families have more information about the health status of the fetus, thereby opening up opportunities for treatment. Implement early intervention measures if necessary to help improve health outcomes for the fetus and mother. Objectives: To evaluate the demand and willingness to pay for prenatal screening procedures related to congenital anomalies among women of reproductive age in Thua Thien Hue province. Materials and methods: A crosssectional descriptive study with 423 women of childbearing age in Thua Thien Hue province in 2023 were interviewed using a paper questionnaire. Results: A noteworthy 86.8% of the study participants expressed a need for prenatal screening. The average amount that people were willing to pay for the First Trimester Screening was 787,843 VND. The average amount that people were willing to pay for the three non-invasive prenatal testing packages were 1,203,428 VND, 1,497,606 VND, and 2,199,468 VND, respectively. Conclusions: This study revealed a high demand for prenatal screening for congenital anomalies among women of reproductive age in Thua Thien Hue. However, the service fees for non-invasive prenatal screening packages at healthcare centers were significantly higher than the amounts that people were willing to pay. These findings are crucial for supporting the management of screening programs, providing essential information to shape health insurance policies, and assisting with costs and co-payment for prenatal screening tests for congenital anomalies.
