EFFICACY OF LACTOSE-FREE MILK IN TREATING ROTAVIRUS-INDUCED ACUTE GASTROENTERITIS IN INFANTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Backgroud: Rotavirus is the leading cause of acute diarrhea and secondary lactose intolerance in infants. The practice of refeeding lactose-free formula to reduce the duration of diarrhea has not been recommended and remains controversial. In Vietnam, there has been no research on this issue. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of lactose-free formula in children aged 2-24 months, had with acute gastroenteritis caused by Rotavirus at Can Tho Children's Hospital. Materials and methods: A randomized control trial was performed on 46 infants from 2 to 24 months of age with induced-Rotavirus acute gastroenteritis at the Gastroenterology ward of Can Tho Children’s Hospital, excluding children on breastfeeding. Results: A total of 46 children participated in this trial, with a median age was 14 ± 4.9 months, and 28 paticipants (60.9%) were male. There were no significant differences between the lactose-free group and the placebo group in the duration of diarrhea (128.9 ± 19.8 hours and 124.7 ± 25.3 hours, respectively; p = 0.532), the duration of vomiting (47.0 ± 19.5 hours versus 44.2 ± 24.7 hours; p = 0.679), the days of hospitalization (6.8 ± 1.8 versus 8.0 ± 3.9; p = 0.391), and the total score of Vesikari (14.2 ± 2.4 versus 13.7 ± 2.6; p = 0.525) also did not differ between the two groups. Conclusion: Lactose-free formula does not reduce diarrhea duration in children under 24 months with Rotavirus-induced gastroenteritis.
