Abstract

Background:  Burns are common injuries. Depending on the burn degrees, the patient suffers from different effects and sequelae. Kalanchoe pinnata have long been used in traditional medicine for the burn treatment. However, in Vietnam, there have not been any experimental studies on the treatment effect of K.pinnata leaves. Research helps provide scientific evidence for the K.pinnata burn treatment ability. Objectives: 1. Investigate the steam burn model in white mice; 2. Evaluation of local toxicity and local therapeutic efficacy of K.pinnata ointment on experimental burn model. Materials and methods: The steam burn model was performed on white mice with 3 exposure time levels: 1s, 3s and 7s. Evaluation of local toxicity by observing the level of irritation of 3 rabbits applied K.pinnata ointment after 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours. The wound-healing effect was studied in 5 batches of 30 white mice, with the treatment order: placebo, silver sulfadiazine, lowdose and high-dose of K.pinnata ointment. Each mice batch was monitored and evaluated for local clinical manifestations after 4, 9, 14 days. Result: Steam burns with a duration of 3 seconds are suitable for testing the effects of mastication. There is almost no irritation sign on the healthy skin of the rabbit. Both low and high doses of K.pinnata ointment showed effective results in local burn wound healing (p<0.05). Although there was no difference in efficacy between K.pinnata ointment and silver sulfadiazine. But in terms of morphology when recovering, the wound surface in the testgroup did not leave scars and hair grew more evenly than the positive control group. Conclusion: K.pinnata ointment are non-irritating and effective in treating local burn lesions. No difference in efficacy was observed with silver sulfadiazine; K.pinnata ointment gives a better wound shape after healing, leaving no scars.
