KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE REGARDING OCCUPATIONAL HIV/AIDS EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS AMONG STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN 2021

Abstract
Background: Medical students represent a population that is at high risk group for occupational HIV/AIDS exposure from frequently care of patients and performing clinical procedures. Objectives: This study aims to determine right knowledge and practice regarding occupational HIV/AIDS exposure prevention and its related factors among students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 626 students majoring in General Medicine, Traditional Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Odonto-Stomatology, Nursing from the third to the penultimate year at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy from November 2021 to January 2022. Results: The rates of students who met good knowledge and practice regarding occupational HIV/AIDS exposure prevention was 57.2% and 14.1%, respectively. The proportion of students with occupational HIV/AIDS exposure was 8%. It was more likely good practice in students who achieved good knowledge compared to students who did not achieve good knowledge (18.7% compared to 7.8%, respectively, OR=2.708, p<0.001). Conclusions: The rates of students who have achieved good knowledge and practice of occupational HIV/AIDS exposure prevention is quite low. Futher studies are necessary to find out appropriate solutions.
