Abstract

Background: Testosterone is an important male hormone that plays a role in male sexual activity. Many studies have shown that there is a decrease in sex hormones, mainly testosterone, in male patients with type 2 diabetes. Objectives: To determine the rate of decrease in total plasma testosterone concentration in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Material and method: 105 male patients aged 40 years and older were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, the research method was cross-sectional description. Results: The mean testosterone concentration in the group of patients with type 2 diabetes was 4.2±2.3 ng/mL lower than in the control group (5.5±1.9 ng/mL). The rate of decreased testosterone in patients with type 2 diabetes was 41%, which was related to duration of diabetes >10 years and inadequate fasting glycemic control. Conclusion: Male patients with type 2 diabetes have a higher rate of reduction in plasma testosterone levels than the control group.
