Abstract

Background: The intertrochanteric fracture is quite common, especially in elderly patients. Objectives: To evaluate the treatment results of unstable intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients with bipolar hemiarthroplasty. Materials and method: A cross sectional  descriptive study was conducted on 40 patients of age greater than 70 years old unstable intertrochanteric fracture were treated with partial hip replacement from January 2022 to March 2023 at Ca Mau General Hospital. Results: The average age was 79.48 years old having intertrochanteric fracture. There were 9 males and 31 females. The fracture type was classified  according to system of the AO, including 16 A2.2 and 24 A2.3. According to the Singh classification, there were 14 osteoporosis  patients in grade II and 18 osteoporosis patients grade III 97.5% of patients heal the incision in the primary. The mean operative time was 80.50 ± 14.84 minutes. We fixed fragments of the intertrochanteric in 23 patients, including 20 patients who used stainless steel wire, 3 patients who used stainless steel wire and Kirschner wire. The average length of hospital stay was 17.25 ± 3.54 days. 6 cases with early complications and 8 patients cases with late complications post-surgery. The Merlr D’ Aubige Postel score  was good; the morderate at one month was 77.5% and at three months was 87.5%. Conclusion: Bipolar hemiarthroplasty for unstable intertrochanteric fracture is a good surgical treatment for old osteoporosis patients.
