SURVEY ON MEDICATION ADHERENCE AND RELATED FACTORS OF ELDERLY OUTPATIENTS WITH HYPERTENSION IN CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL IN 2022-2023

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide. Medication adherence is an important factor determining the success of treatment. Studying about medication adherence of elderly outpatients with hypertension is a matter of concern. Objectives: (1) Identifying medication adherence rate of elderly outpatients with hypertension in Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2022-2023; (2) Identifying factors related to medication adherence of elderly outpatients with hypertension. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis was conducted on 358 elderly outpatients with hypertension in Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from 9/2022-2/2023. Assessment of medication adherence based on Morisky's questionnaire. Data were collected and analyzed by using Excel 2016 and SPSS 26.0 software. Results: The medication adherence rate was 70.1%. Factors such as age group, occupation, education level, family economy, disease duration, family history of hypertension and comorbidities were related to medication adherence of elderly outpatients with hypertension (p<0.05). Conclusions: Elderly outpatients with hypertension had a relatively high rate of medication adherence. Identifying related factors to medication adherence helps medical staff to provide appropriate treatment for the patient.
