Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is currently a global health burden with high economic costs on health systems. In Vietnam, recently, about 0.012% of the population has end-stage chronic kidney disease, and this rate is increasing by 8.1% year, of which 21,000 people are on renal replacement therapy. At Hoan My Saigon Hospital, CKD is also among the diseases listed in the list of common diseases in 2021. Therefore, health education counseling to maintain and improve patients' knowledge and correct practice is necessary and plays an important role. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of health education counseling for patients with chronic kidney disease at the inpatient department of Hoan My Saigon Hospital. Materials and research methods: Conducting with a survey study design before and after receiving health education counseling on 60 CKD inpatients treated at Hoan My Saigon Hospital from 07/2022 to the end of 10/2022. Results: Surveyed over 60 patients, with the percentage of female (68.3%) and male (31.7%). After the intervention, the patient markedly improved in the knowledge and practice of chronic kidney disease. Regarding knowledge, the percentage of patients with correct knowledge increased from 51.7% to 81.7%, with the average score from 5.30 (±1.430) to 6.98 (±1.501), a difference, statistically significant (p<0.05). Regarding practice, the percentage of patients who practiced correctly increased from 48.3% to 66.7%, with the average score rising from 3.3 (±1.567) to 3.97 (±1.551), a difference, statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: From this view, Nurses' health education (NHE) has significantly improved the knowledge and practice of patients with chronic kidney disease. Therefore, NHE is recommended to be continuously maintained at the hospital.
