Abstract

Background: Musculoskeletal injuries are very common and often have serious consequences. First aid at the accident scene and safe transportation are essential to ensure the survival of the victims. Objectives: To describe the situation of first aid and transportation to the hospital of patients with musculoskeletal injuries treated at An Giang Central General Hospital in 2020-2021. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 497 patients with musculoskeletal injuries treated at An Giang Central General Hospital from May 2020 to May 2021. Diagnosis by combination: history of injury, physical examination, and imaging. Results: 81.7% performed first aid at the scene. The most time frame for performing first aid is 13h - <18h (84.5%), and the lowest is 0h - <6h (71.4%). 51.1% were given first aid on the spot. Surrounding people participating in first aid were mainly (50.9%). The time from injury to first aid is mostly ≤ 5 minutes (49.9%). The bandage is the most performed emergency measure (51.6%), and pain relief is the least common 5.7%. 54.1% were transported to the hospital by motorbike, and 50.1% were transported to the hospital within <60 minutes. Conclusion: It is necessary to open training courses on basic first aid knowledge for medical collaborators and the surrounding people, who are the first to arrive at the scene to minimize trauma complications.
