Abstract

Background: Asthma is the chronic disease in children. M. pneumoniae may be involved in refractory asthma exacerbation. Objectives: Description of the rate of M. pneumoniae infection in asthma, clinical, and paraclinical characteristics of asthma with M. pneumoniae infection in children 6-15 years old at Can Tho Children's Hospital in 2019-2021. Materials and methods: The observational descriptive and observational analytical study over 124 patients at the Respiratory Department and the General Medical Department, Can Tho Children's Hospital from Match 2019 to April 2021. Results: In 124 asthmatic patients, 32.3% specific IgM-M. pneumoniae was positive. Asthmatic patients with infected M. pneumoniae had a higher proportion in fever, high pulse rate, retractions of accessory respiratory muscle, and wheeze than uninfected groups (p<0.05). The incidence of M. pneumoniae infection in patients with first-time asthma onset and previously diagnosed asthma, respectively 42.3% and 25% (p<0.05). There was a relationship between M. pneumoniae infection and acute asthma severity (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our data suggest that children with acute asthma show a high prevalence of M. pneumoniae infection. There was a close association between M. pneumoniae infection with acute asthma exacerbation and the first onset asthma attacks. Therefore, it is necessary to have more studies on the relationship between M. pneumoniae and asthmatic children in order to have appropriate management strategies.
