Abstract

Background: Annona muricata (soursop or graviola) of Annonaceae has been reported to have a broad range of therapeutic effects since the 1940s. Graviola contains acetogenins (ACGs) that have anticancer effects and selective toxicity against various types of cancer cells even when applied at low doses. ACGs are also shown to highly inhibit an enzyme only found in cell membranes of cancerous tumors, which is the reason why the compounds are only toxic to cancer cells, not to healthy ones. The extraction of acetogenins, however, is affected by many factors such as types of solvents, the ratio of raw materials and solvents, temperature, time, and the numbers of extractions… Objectives: Studying the extraction conditions of graviola (Annona muricata (L.) Annonaceae) to determine the optimal acetogenins extraction process. Materials and methods: Testing each factor affecting the extraction process in case of remaining stable of other elements. Results: Leaves had the highest content of ACGs; Determining the optimal extraction conditions: solvent (70% of ethanol), the ratio of herbal-solvent (1:25), extraction temperature (50°C), extraction time (60 minutes), and once of extraction. Conclusion: The study determined the parts of graviola and the extraction parameters for optimal content of ACGs, which is a premise for researches on preparing products from graviola.
