Abstract

Background: During the COVID-19 period, quarantine regulations were issued leading to people's restriction of traffic which could contribute to reducing the frequency of traumatic head injury. In the Mekong Delta, there are currently no new epidemiological studies for this population. Therefore, new studies on traumatic head injury need to be supplemented. Objectives: To describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical characteristics, computed tomography scan images and treatment result of patients with traumatic head injury. Materials and methods: Case series study conducted on 61 patients with traumatic head injury at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from January 2021 to October 2022. Results: The study was conducted on 61 patients, including 39 men (63.9%), 22 women (36.1%). The average age was 47.5 ± 19.5; the youngest: 20, the oldest: 94; the most common cause was traffic accidents (57.4%), domestic accidents (37.7%) and scrimmage (4.9%). Older women suffer more traumatic head injuries due to domestic accidents than men. There were 29.1% of patients had multi-organ damage. 55.8% of patients had images of cranial and intracranial lesions on a computed tomography scan. Conservative treatment was indicated in 91.8% of patients and surgical treatment was indicated in 5 patients. Discharge result: 83.6 % patients had good treatment results, patients with moderate sequelae account for 13.1%, patients with severe sequelae account for 3.3% and there were no deaths and vegetative state. Conclusions: It is necessary to raise community awareness about ensuring safety when participating in traffic and preventing falls in the elderly. Emergency treatment of head injuries requires the coordination of many specialties. Medical staff should not be subjective when treating patients with head injuries, even mild head injuries.
