Abstract

  Background: Hypertension is a common disease in the world as well as in Vietnam,  great threat to human health, leading cause of disability and death in the elderly. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and degree of hypertension and find out some related factors to hypertension in the elderly in My Tu district, Soc Trang province in 2020-2021. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 800 elderly people. Results: The rate of hypertension in the elderly was 41.1%; grade 1 hypertension was 76.9%; grade 2 hypertension was 19.8%; grade 3 hypertension was 3.3%; male hypertension was 42.3%; female hypertension was 40.4%; age group from 60-69 high blood pressure was 37.8%; age group from 70-79 high blood pressure was 44.8%; age group ≥ 80 years old hypertension was 48.7%; smoking increased blood pressure was 47%; salt intake increased blood pressure was 48.2%; exercise increased blood pressure was 36.7% and no exercise raised blood pressure was 49.7%; Drinking alcohol increased blood pressure by 46.6% and not drinking alcohol increased blood pressure by 38,7%. Conclusion: Hypertension in the elderly is still quite common in the community, so it is necessary to strengthen communication to provide knowledge for people to know how to better care and monitor hypertension to reduce the burden of disease.
