THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT 11 CASES OF DUODENAL ATRESIA AT CAN THO CHILDREN HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Duodenal obstruction due to duodenal atresia is common, early diagnosis and treatment can achieve good results for pediatric patients. Objectives: To describe  the  clinical, paraclinical features and results of duodenal atresia treatment in children. Methods and Materials: This was a cross sectional descriptive study, all patients was diagnosed and treated duodenal obstruction at NICU of Can Tho Children Hospital. Results: From January - 2017 to May-2019, we recorded 11 cases of duodenal obstruction that were received operation treatment in Can Tho Children Hospital. There were 6 males and 5 female and the youngest was 1 day old and oldest was 30 months. Mean birth weight was 2872 ± 460 gram (min 2100 gram, max 3500gram). 6 per 11 cases were proposed follow-up because of suggestion factors. 1 case with L – Down syndrome, 2 heart defect and 1 multi malformation. Bilious vomiting was in 100 percent of patients and 3 cases admitted in our department from another hospital because of aspiration pneumonia. Double-bubble sign without gas in small intestine presented in 63.6 percent of patients. Totally oral feeding meaning time was 6.7 ± 1.4 days and hospital stay was 15.2 ± 2.4 days. Mortality rate was zero and 2 cases (18.2 percentage) had surgical site infection. Conclusion: Duodenal obstruction can be diagnosed prenatal period. Our results is good but others studies show the mortality rate is still high and it depends on full term or not and birth defects.
