Abstract

Background: Stroke is the second leading cause of death in the world, with a third of deaths attributed to post-stroke complications such as infections, cardiovascular complications, and others. Understanding associated complications and related factors can help develop an intervention protocol to reduce complications, mortality, and medical care costs after stroke. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of early complications after stroke and survey some associated factors in stroke patients admitted at Long Khanh Regional General Hospital from 2022 to 2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 150 patients diagnosed with a cerebral stroke at Long Khanh Regional General Hospital in 2021-2022. Results: Through the survey of 150 patients, we recorded: the mean age was 63.47 ± 12.93, the male/female ratio was 1.2, and the majority lived in rural areas 74.0%. 82.0 patients had a history of hypertension. The rate of early complications after stroke is 18.0%, with pneumonia accounting for the most rate at 12.7%. Factors associated with early complications after stroke include a history of diabetes, the story of cerebral hemorrhage, stroke type, Glasgow score, Rankin score, and NIHSS score. Conclusions: Early complications after stroke are common and need to be closely monitored for timely detection and treatment.
