THE PREVALENCE RATE OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY AMONG 18 – 60 YEARS OLD TYPE 2 DIABETES OUTPATIENTS TREATMENT IN CAN THO CITY

Abstract

  Background: Clinical significant depression and anxiety are common in type 2 diabetes millitus. Psychological factors, especially anxiety and depression, has proposed methodological changes to treatment and increased cost for treatment. Objective:  1). To determine the prevalence of depression  prevalence rate of anxiety desorder of co-morbidity of depression in type 2 diabectes millitus (T2DM). 2). To determine the correlation between depression and anxiety disorder in patients with type 2 diabetes. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 91 patients, was diagnosed and outpatient treament with type 2 diabetes millitus (T2DM) longer 3 months in Can Tho University Hospital of Medicine and Pharmacy and Can Tho Department of Can Tho Cardiovascular Hospital. PHQ – 9 was used to determine depression and GAD - 7 was used to determine anxiety disorder in type 2 diabetes millitus (T2DM). Result: The majority of the participants were women (60.4%). The prevalence of depression and anxiety in type 2 diabetes patients were respectively 37.4% and 33%. Patients with depression and anxiety disorder were 24.2%, depression only was 13.3% and anxiety disorder only was 8.8%. The study determined the correlation between axiety and depression in type 2 diabetes millitus (T2DM) (p < 0.0001, α = 0.1) with OR = 1.2 (>1) 95% CI. Conclusions: Depression and anxiety were extremely common among outpatients with type 2 diabetes and have a significant correlation. Routine screening and management of the psychological aspects among diabetic patients were strongly recommended.
