Abstract

Background: The inappropriate use of drugs is likely to cause drug use-related problems (DRPs).Common drug-related problems include: drug inefficiencies, inappropriate indications, drug side effects, overdose, under-dosage, inappropriate timing of administration and drug interactions. Objectives: To determine the incidence of some drug-related problems in health insurance prescriptions for outpatient treatment of patients with respiratory diseases, and take intervention measures to reduce the rate of DRPs. Materials and menthod: Descriptive crosssectional study on outpatient health insurance prescriptions with a diagnosis of respiratory disease (2022 - 2023) in the medical examination department at a hospital in Can Tho. Prescriptions are collected from prescription software. Pharmacists determine DRPs by comparing the prescription's compliance with reference documents: the drug's instruction sheet, the Vietnam National Pharmacopoeia 2015, and the Ministry of Health's treatment guidelines Results: Among 335 prescriptions evaluated, the number of prescriptions with at least 1 DRP before intervention accounted for 69.6%, and after intervention was 31.8%; Inappropriate indications before intervention were 41.5%, after intervention were 7.1%; Inappropriate time of use before intervention accounts for 40.3%, after intervention accounts for 10.9%; The number of inappropriate uses before intervention was 31.3%, and after intervention was 20.3%, with a statistically significant difference before and after intervention (p<0.001). Conclusion: In our study, drug-related problems were still common in prescription related to respiratory disease. When there is good coordination between clinical pharmacists and prescribing doctors, drug-related problems in prescribing can be limited.
