FREQUENCY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE USE IN WORK AND NEEDS FOR LANGUAGE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT AMONGST LECTURERS AGED 40 OR UNDER AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract

Background: Improvement of language performance to serve work is required in almost every position, and this requirement is even more crucial for lecturers, especially ones aged 40 or under. Objectives: To describe the frequency of using foreign languages in work among the lecturers and to determine needs for improving their language performance. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was done on 121 lecturers at the age of 40 or under. Data were collected with survey questionnaires via google forms. Results: Frequency of foreign language use had a mean of 1.28±0.76 on a 5 point Likert scale (0 for“never” and 4 for“always”). Mean of the needs for language performance improvement to serve work and to obtain a language certificate or diploma on the scale of 10 was 8.0±2.3 and 7.7±2.8 respectively. Conclusions: The frequency of foreign language use in work among the lecturers is not high. However, they have high demands of upgrading their language performance to serve work as well as to achieve a language certificate or diploma.
