INVESTIGATION ON THE TECHNIQUE OF FIXING AUTOLOGOUS CONJUNCTIVAL GRAFTS BY AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD COMBINED WITH BIPOLAR CAUTERY IN THE TREATMENT OF PRIMARY PTERYGIUM AT CAN THO OPHTHALMOLOGY-DENTAL MAXILLOFACIAL HOSPITAL IN 2022-2023

Abstract
Background: Autologous Conjunctival Grafts is an effective, safe, and popular method in the treatment of pterygium. Many studies have used autologous blood and bipolar cautery to fixing grafts in surgical pterygium. Objectives: To assess the outcome of the technique fixing autologous limbus conjunctival grafts by autologous blood combined with bipolar cautery in the treatment of primary pterygium. Materials and methods: Prospective descriptive study without a control group. We performed autologous conjunctival grafts surgical pterygium with fixing the grafts by autologous blood combined with bipolar cautery in 60 eyes on 59 patients with primary medial pterygium during the period from November 2022 to April 2023 at Can Tho Ophthalmology - Dental Maxillofacial Hospital. Results: Mean age 54.85 years old (±11.02), 86.7% pterygium grade III, common form of pterygium was intermediate pterygium (60%). No complications in surgery was noted. The average surgical time was 30.3 minutes (±5.6 minutes). Complications on the first day after surgery: grafts edema (36.6%), grafts opening and retraction (18.7%), one eye of severe grafts opening grade III must be sutured by 10.0 nylon thread, one eye of grafts loss (1.7%). 85% patients experienced mild stimulation or no stimulation (8.3%) on the first day after surgery. One eye recurrent at the third month after surgery (1.7%). Conclusion: Autologous limbal conjunctival grafts surgical pterygium with fixing graft by autologous blood combined with bipolar cautery was an effective and safe method in the treatment of primary pterygium.
