Abstract

Background: Assess the situation of drug prescription and drug interactions in patients with chronic respiratory disease in order to improve the quality of drug prescribing and drug use based on consensus from many database. Objectives: Determining the rate and extent of drug interactions in prescriptions in patients with chronic respiratory disease at the Hospital Department of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2022-2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 227 prescriptions for chronic respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Assess drug interactions with the interaction tool on the Medscape.com website, Drugs.com website and the IBM Micromedex mobile app. Results: Drug interactions occurred in prescriptions with a rate of 21.59%, of which the number of interactions on prescriptions of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was 16.30%, prescriptions of asthma patients was 5.29%, the rate of drug interactions by pharmacokinetic mechanism accounted for the largest proportion among the interaction mechanism subgroups with the rate of 52.52%, the lowest number of interaction pairs with unknown mechanism was 12.12%. Conclusion: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have a higher rate of drug interactions than asthma patients, the rate of drug interactions according to the pharmacokinetic mechanism accounts for the largest proportion with rate of 52.52%, rate of drug interactions by unknown mechanism accounts for the smallest rate with the rate of 12.12%, pair of interaction with the highest frequency is Clopidogrel-Atorvastatin with the rate of 9.09%..
