Abstract

Background: Molars play an important role in chewing and maintaining the vertical dimension. The presence of subgingival lesions makes the approach to restoration difficult and there is a risk of periodontal tissue damage due to invasion of the biological width. Objectives: Describe the characteristics of molars with loss of subgingival structure and periodontal tissue in clinical and on cone beam computed tomography film. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 40 patients with molars indicated for periodontal crown lengthening at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Results: Most teeth are mandibular molar, with subgingival lesions on more than one tooth surface. Periodontal indices are within a favorable range for performing periodontal surgery. Thick gingival phenotype prevails, the average distance from the lesion margin to the crest was 1.92 mm, so alveolar bone adjustment was required. Conclusions: Clinical examination combined with cone-beam computed tomography helps to make accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment planning for teeth restoration and reestablish biological width.
