Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common chronic disease and is currently a prominent problem in public health care. Adherence to taking medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor is essential for an effective treatment. Objectives: (1) To determine the proportion and degree of adherence to treatment in hypertentsive patients over 60 years at the Clinic of U Minh District Medical Center, Ca Mau Province in 2022-2023. (2) To identify some related factors to the non-adherence of medication in high blood pressure patients. (3) To evaluate the results of communication interventions on treatment adherence in hypertensive patients. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive and non-controlled pre-post-intervention study of 320 patients aged 60 years and older was diagnosed with hypertension and outpatient treatment at U Minh District Medical Center. Results: The proportion of general treatment adherence according to Morisky was 36.6%, patients with other occupations had the rate of non-adherence to treatment 3.03 times higher than the group of patients who lost their ability to work (p=0.011). After the intervention, the rate of patients who adhere to the treatment was 90.6%, non-adherent patients had a rate of uncontrolled blood pressure after intervention 2.68 times higher than those with adherence (p=0.01). Conclusion: The adherence rate according to Morisky before intervention was low, only 36.6%, there was a relationship between occupations for non-adherenence in hypertensive patients. After intervention, the rate of drug adherence increased to 90.6%, there was a relationship between non-compliance and blood pressure control of patients.
