SOME DRUG-RELATED PROBLEMS IN PRESCRIBING FOR GERIATRIC OUTPATIENTS AT TRA CU MEDICAL CENTER, TRA VINH PROVINCE IN 2022

Abstract

Background: The inappropriate use of drugs in the elderly is likely to cause drug use-related problems (DRPs). Common drug-related problems in the elderly include: drug inefficiencies, drug side effects, overdose, under-dosage, and drug interactions. Objective: To determine the rate of occurrence of some drug-related problems in outpatient prescribing in elderly patients. Materials and methods: The study was carried out on outpatient prescriptions of elderly patients with health insurance and treating doctors at Tra Cu Medical Center, Tra Vinh province in 2022. Cross-sectional descriptive study, retrospective data collection method. Results: In 450 outpatient prescriptions of elderly patients were surveyed. The rate of occurrence of at least one problem related to drug use was 249 prescriptions, accounting for 55.3%. In which, the DRPs group on inappropriate drug indications was 6.9%, the DRPs group on unreasonable dosages 21.5%, the group of inappropriate times taking drugs 38.7%, the DRPs group on time inappropriate use of drugs during the day was 28.9%, the DRPs group in terms of time of drug use compared with meals was 12% and serious drug interactions in prescriptions was 6.4%. Conclusion: The rate of DRP related to prescribing for the elderly is quite high. Inappropriate dose selection, inappropriate drug timing and inappropriate dose selection were the most common DRPs in our study.
