Abstract

Background: Chronic otitis media is defined as any structural change in the middle ear system associated with permanent perforation of the eardrum for a period greater than 3 months. Tympanoplasty is the surgical procedure performed to repair a perforated tympanic membrane. The goal of this surgical procedure is not only to close the perforation but also to improve hearing. Objectives: To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics and to assess the results of endoscopic tympanoplasty with mixed grafts on patients with chronic otitis and tympanic membrane perforation. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study, prospective design with clinical interventions on 50 cases of chronic otitis media with tympanic perforation were doing endoscopic tympanoplasty using mixed grafts at Can Tho Ear Nose Throat Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from March 2021 to May 2023. Results: The average age of the study group was 43.56±13.21 years old. The rate of main clinical symptoms were ear discharge (86%), hearing loss (78%). Endoscopic features include: location of tympanic membrane perforation center (36%), medium hole (44%). The audiogram results: conductive hearing loss accounted for the highest rate of 66% with hearing loss was mild (52%). The overall tympanic membrane's healing rate after 3 month of surgery was 98%, and after 6 months the healing rate increased 94%. The average hearing improved after 6 months to 29.20±8.10 dB. The average level of hearing loss before surgery was 40.73±14.15 dB. Conclusions: Chronic otitis media with main symptoms is ear discharge and hearing loss. Evaluation of treatment results: the rate of atrial healing after 3 months was 98%, after 6 months was 94%. Functionally, mean hearing improvement from 40.73±14.15 dB to 29.20±8.10 dB 6 months after surgery.
