Abstract

 Background: Posterior circulation strokes represent approximately 20% of all ischemic strokes. Variation in symptoms, clinical evaluation, diagnostic testing, and management strategy exist presenting a challenge to the treating physician. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the clinical, subclinical characteristics, risk factors and treatment results of patients with acute posterior circulation stroke. Materials and methods: A prospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 30 patients with acute posterior circulation stroke at neurology department of Can Tho Central General Hospital from 2019 to 2020. Results: Among 30 patients with posterior circulation stroke, 50% had extremity weakness, 40% had vertigo, 23.3% had dysarthria, 16.7% had nystagmus and 20% had transient ischemic attacks as a single risk factor. Infarcts most often included the pontine paramedian penetrators territories with 43.3% and superior cerebellar artery territories with 30%. Mortality was low (6.7%) and most patients (70%) had mild disability, 23.3% had moderate disability. Conclusion: Posterior circulation strokes had broad spectrum of clinical scenarios, which present a challenge to the treating physician.
