Abstract

Background: Distal femoral fractures include condylar or supracondylar femoral fracture. A condylar femoral fracture is a joint fracture in which a reconstruction of the articular surface is necessary to restore normal joint function. Conservative treatment of distal femoral fractures often results in poor treatment and rehabilitation of the knee joint. Therefore, surgery is the optimal solution to treat distal femoral fractures. There are several methods of osteosynthesis employed in the treatment of distal femoral fractures. Among these, osteosynthesis with locking plates is an advanced treatment. Objectives: To evaluate results of the treatment of distal femoral fractures with locking plates at Can Tho Central General Hospital in 2020 and 2021. Materials and methods: A prospective study was employed to carry out this research from June 2020 to August 2021. Forty-five patients at Can Tho Central General Hospital were observed and evaluated for at least three months by Schatzker and Lambert criteria. Results: Of the 45 patients, there were 23 males and 22 females. The average age was 44. The average observation time was six months. The rate of bone union among the patients was 97.8%. According to Schatzker and Lambert criteria, the treatments obtained promising results on 31.1% of the patients, fair on 48.9%, average on 15.6% and poor ones on 4.4%. Conclusion: The treatment of distal femoral fractures with locking plates achieved a high success rate. Locking plates united almost all kinds of distal femoral fractures, even in patients with osteoporosis.
