Abstract

Background: Current clinical studies show that a good antihypertensive strategy helps reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Medication adherence reduces the burden of diseases. Objectives: To determine the adherence rate and factors associated with adherence to antihypertensive medications. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study, involving insured hypertension outpatients treated at Can Tho General Hospital between June and December 2020. A total of 330 patients who were over 18 years with cognitive-communication competence and agreed to participate in our study were included. Data were collected through interviews and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 items, and SPSS 26.0 for Windows was used for analysis. Results: The rate of adherence to antihypertensive treatment was 70%. High educational level was found to be positively associated with treatment adherence. In contrast, aging, rural areas, reduced labor, prolonged hypertension, prolonged treatment were negatively associated. Conclusions: The rate of adherence to antihypertensive treatment was 70%. The identification of factors that reduce medication adherence warrants further research on pharmaceutical care for patients with hypertension.
