DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND STRESS DISORDERS AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS OF CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY DURING THE FOURTH WAVE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN VIETNAM

Abstract

Background: The pandemic has put medical employees, including medical students under higher pressure. Therefore, besides studying, medical students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy have been suffering another pressure from participating in the fight against the COVID-19. Objectives: To determinethe prevalence, severity and factors associated with stress, depression, anxiety among students participating in the prevention of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study on 816 3rd to 6th -year medical students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Results: The overall mean score for depression was: 6.83±7.52; for anxiety was: 6.29±6.25 and for stress was: 10±8.27. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress measured using DASS-21 among students during the COVID-19 pandemic was 30.3%, 46.2%, and 26.3%, respectively. The majority of these mental disorders were mild and moderate in severity. There was a statistically significant relationship between the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress and gender, year of student. Surprisingly, the group of students who did not engage in the local pandemic fight had a significantly higher prevalence of depression than the group of students who did participate in. Conclusion: The fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had affected anxiety, depression and stress among medical students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. There were many factors associated with these disorders such as gender, year and participation of student in the fight against of COVID-19 pandemic.
