AN OVERVIEW OF DEPRESSIVE DISORDERS IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Hypertension and depression are two common health problems and are always concerned in each of their specialty. However, the high prevalence of depressive disorders in patients with cardiovascular disease in general and hypertension in particular has not been paid enough attention. The prevalence of depression in the hypertensive population ranges from 26.8% to 46%. Factors that can be related to the rate of depression in this population are socio-economic factors, marriage status, gender, age and history of depression, etc. Depression associated with hypertension seems to exacerbate more cardiovascular outcomes in hypertensive patients, lower quality of life, and lower adherence. Despite this, depression has not been fully diagnosed and treated in this cardiovascular disease population, even when safe and effective treatments are available. Several studies initially related to the treatment of depression in patients with primary hypertension have been shown to improve heart rate, blood pressure, reduce cardiovascular outcomes in cognitive impairment, and improve adherence on the patients.
