TO EVALUATE THE RESULTS OF PHACOEMULSIFICATION SURGERY WITH INTRAOCULAR LENS IMPLANTATION IN PATIENTS WITH POSTERIOR POLAR CATARACT

Abstract
Background: Posterior polar cataract is a rare form. Surgery on this morphology presents many challenges for the phaco surgeon. Therefore, we carried out this study to evaluate the results of Phaco surgery to place the artificial lens on patients with posterior polar cataract at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital. Objectives: (1) To evaluate the improvement of visual acuity after phaco posterior cataract surgery, (2) To determine the relationship between the improvement of visual acuity and the morphology and stage of posterior cataract, (3) To investigate complications of surgery. Materials and method: This prospective study comprised 27 patients were diagnosed with the posterior polar cataract with intraocular lens implantation from March 2021 to October 2021. Results: 27 patients, including 13 males (48.14%) and 14 females (51.86%). The mean age of patients was 61.5 ± 5.87 years. Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 cataract were seen in 1 eyes (3.7%), 14 eyes (51.9%) and 12 eyes (44.4%), respectively. Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4 cataract were seen in 3 eyes (11.1%), 19 eyes (70.4%) and 5 eyes (18.5%), respectively. Mean uncorrected visual acuity preoperative value of 0.25 ± 0.15. One month postoperative, mean uncorrected visual acuity of 0.73 ± 0.14. Six month postoperative, mean uncorrected visual acuity of 0.75 ± 0.18. These three patients had residual posterior capsule plaque. Conclusions: The phacoemulsification surgery with intraocular lens implantation is a safe and effective method to restore vision in patients with posterior polar cataracts. Visual acuity improved significantly in most cases.
