Abstract

Backgound: extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in treament of upper ureteral stone is easy to perform, with the supine position, the shock-wave head is placed in the hips, from the back, the shock-waves pass through the lumbar muscle and are not distracted by intestinal gas, making it easy to reach and break the stone. Objectives: survey clinical and subclinical characteristics and evaluate the early results of the treatment of 80 upper ureteral stones by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy at Can Tho central general hospital. Materials and methods: research crosssectional description on the patients with upper ureteral stones with size ≤ 15mm, are treated with extracorporeal lithotripsy at Can Tho Central General Hospital from 1/2019 to 10/2020. Results: total of 80 case, youngest age: 18 years old, oldest: 78 years old, average: 58.420.6 years old. The most common clinical symptom is flank pain (70%), of which acute renal colic account for 52.5%, not much affecting kidney function, most of which are moderate contrast stones, average size of stones is 11.3mm. The overall success rate is 86.7%. The cumulative success rate for one time is 51.5%, for two times is 68.9%, for three times is 87.5%, and for four times is 88.6%, averaging 2.3 times per case. 80% had only mild pain, the local skin was usually transient red. The most common complication is that a broken piece of stone falls into the lower ureter (27%) and causes pain (15%), 95% has hematuria immediately after the lithotripsy and goes away on its own. Conclusion: extracorporeal lithotripsy treatment of ureteral stones with a high success rate (87.5%), the least invasive, and no need for anesthesia combined,... is more widely used.
