Abstract

Background: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder associated with sebaceous gland activity, affecting both children and adults. Objectives: To investigate clinical characteristics, skin pH, skin hydration, and associated factors in adult patients with seborrheic dermatitis treated at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 65 patients diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis. Data on clinical features, skin pH values, and skin hydration levels were collected. Results: The disease was most common in the 18–29 age group (73.8%), with a male predominance (76.9%). Most patients lived in urban areas (83.1%) and were students (69.2%). Lesions were mainly localized (53.8%), well-demarcated (58.5%), and of moderate severity (72.3%). Oily skin was predominant (76.9%), and 87.7% of patients reported stress-related factors. Regarding skin physiological parameters, most patients had increased skin pH (>6.0) in 72.3% and decreased skin hydration (level 1) in 67.7%. No statistically significant associations were found between demographic and lifestyle factors and disease severity, skin pH, or skin hydration (p >0.05). However, males tended to have more severe disease, and patients experiencing stress showed a tendency toward lower skin hydration levels. Conclusion: Elevated pH and reduced hydration were associated with impaired skin barrier function and may promote microbial proliferation on the skin. No statistically significant associations were observed between demographic and lifestyle factors and disease severity, skin pH, or skin hydration.
