Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is a common chronic dermatological condition that significantly affects cosmetic appearance and the psychological well-being of many individuals. Objectives: to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with moderate-to-severe acne vulgaris at Can Tho Hospital of Dermato-Venereology in 2025-2026. Materials and method: A crosssectional descriptive study was conducted on 124 patients with moderate-to-severe acne vulgaris from August 2025 to February 2026. Results: The mean age of participants was 22.85 ± 3.81 years, with the 18 to 25 age group accounting for the highest proportion (72.6%). Females predominated over males, with a male-to-female ratio of 1/1.5. Pruritus or stinging sensations were reported by 37.1% of patients, while 24.2% experienced pain. All patients had facial acne lesions (100%), while the chest and back were also frequently involved, with prevalence rates of 37% and 43.5%, respectively. Inflammatory acne lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts were highly prevalent, accounting for 98.4%, 87.1%, and 93.5%, respectively. Moderate acne had a higher proportion (62.9%), while severe acne accounted for 37.1%. The mean severity score according to the Global Acne Grading System was 27.21 ± 6.62. Among risk factors for moderate-to-severe acne, late sleeping and sleep deprivation were the most common, accounting for 80.6%. Conclusions: Moderate-to-severe acne vulgaris commonly affects young individuals. Patients may experience pruritus, stinging sensations, and pain. Acne lesions mainly involve the face and are characterized predominantly by inflammatory papules, pustules, and nodulocystic lesions, mainly at a moderate severity level. Family history of acne, high sugar intake, high dairy consumption, late bedtime, insufficient sleep and overweight were all significantly associated with severe acne.
