MOTOR COMPLICATIONS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN PARKINSON’S DISEASE PATIENTS IN CAN THO CITY

Abstract
Background: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which motor complications frequently develop and significantly impair patients’ quality of life. Objective: To determine the prevalence of motor complications and identify associated factors in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 90 patients diagnosed according to the criteria of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society at Can Tho Central General Hospital from July 2024 to February 2026. Results: Among 90 patients, 60% were female. The mean age was 72.7 ± 11.7 years, mean age at onset 64.6
± 9.8 years, and mean disease duration 8.0 ± 4.2 years. The prevalence of motor complications was 73.3%. Wearing-off was the most common (28.8%), on–off phenomenon (20%), followed by delayed-on (15,6%), and dyskinesia (8.8%). The mean MDS-UPDRS III score was significantly higher in patients with motor complications (39.9 ± 7.4) compared to those without (p < 0.001). Motor complications were associated with longer disease duration, prolonged levodopa use, higher levodopa dose, and advanced disease stage. Conclusion: Motor complications are common in Parkinson’s disease, with motor fluctuations occurring more frequently than dyskinesia. Wearingoff was the predominant pattern. Longer disease duration, extended levodopa exposure, higher dosage, and advanced stage were strongly associated with motor complications.
