PREVALENCE OF SARCOPENIA AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN NON-DIALYSIS CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE PATIENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia is a prevalent complication among non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients, tending to deteriorate with disease progression, thereby increasing mortality risk and impairing quality of life. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients. Materials and methods: A crosssectional descriptive study was conducted on 84 patients with chronic kidney disease not yet on regular dialysis at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during the period 2024– 2026. Characteristics related to sarcopenia and chronic kidney disease were analyzed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and factors associated with sarcopenia in chronic kidney disease patients. Data were processed using SPSS Statistics 27, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 35.7%, of which 9.5% had severe sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia across CKD stages 3a, 3b, 4, and 5 was 28.6%, 44.4%, 66.7%, and 75.0%, respectively (p < 0.001). CKD stage, BMI, and sex were independent factors associated with sarcopenia. Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 35.7%. CKD stage, BMI, and sex were independently associated with sarcopenia after adjustment. Screening for sarcopenia should be performed in CKD patients, particularly in those with advanced stages.
