Abstract

Background: Pyogenic infections are common conditions that impose a considerable treatment burden. The causative bacterial agents are diverse and may vary according to patient characteristics, disease patterns, and healthcare settings. Objectives: To describe the distribution of bacterial pathogens isolated from pus specimens at Can Tho General Hospital during 2023–2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 806 bacterial isolates obtained from pus specimens. A convenience sampling method was used. Data on sex, age, clinical department, and bacterial identification results were collected. Bacterial identification was performed using the automated Vitek 2 Compact system. Results: The mean patient age was 60.1 ± 13.4 years; nearly 90% of patients were older than 40 years, and females accounted for 53.3%. Most pus specimens were collected from the Endocrinology Department (52.2%) and the Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (16.1%). The two most prevalent pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus (28.0%) and Escherichia coli (19.4%). No significant difference in infection rates of individual pathogens was observed between sexes. The spectrum of pathogens was broader in patients older than 40 years. S. aureus predominated in the Endocrinology (33.0%) and the Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (32.3%), whereas E. coli was the major pathogen in the General Surgery (58.7%) and Outpatient departments (33.3%). Conclusions: Bacterial isolates from pus specimens showed considerable diversity. S. aureus and E. coli were the two predominant pathogens, and their distribution varied according to patient age and clinical department.
