PREVALENCE OF HIGH-RISK HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION AMONG WOMEN ATTENDING GYNECOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS AT CAN THO GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS HOSPITAL IN 2025-2026

Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women, with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection recognized as the primary etiological factor. Determining the prevalence and genotype distribution of high-risk HPV at the local level is essential for developing effective screening and prevention strategies. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and genotype distribution of high-risk HPV among women attending gynecological examinations at Can Tho Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital in 2025–2026. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 1,200 women aged 21-65 years who attended gynecological examinations from October 2025 to March 2026. Cervical specimens were tested for high-risk HPV using genotype Real-time PCR on the Cobas® 4800 system. Results: The prevalence of high-risk HPV infection was 11.2% (134/1,200). Among high-risk HPV-positive cases, the group of 12 high-risk HPV types other than HPV 16 and HPV 18 was the most prevalent (59.0%), followed by HPV 16 (18.7%), HPV 18 (9.7%), HPV 16 + group of 12 high-risk HPV types (8.2%), HPV 18 + group of 12 high-risk HPV types (3.7%), and HPV 16 + HPV 18 + group of 12 high-risk HPV types (0.7%). Conclusion: The prevalence of high-risk HPV infection among women attending gynecological examinations at Can Tho Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital was 11.2%, with a predominance of the 12 high-risk HPV types other than HPV 16 and HPV 18. These findings highlight the need to maintain and expand routine HPV screening programs for effective cervical cancer prevention.
