CHARACTERISTICS OF BACTERIOLOGY AND TREATMENT RESULTS OF COMPLICATED URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS AT CAN THO GENERAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: treatment of patients with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) is difficult due to the high rate of resistance to antibiotics, and patients often have many associated risk factors. Objectives: (1) to determine bacteriological and antibiogram results; (2) to evaluate the treatment results of patients with cUTI. Materials and methods: a prospective cross-sectional descriptive study of 75 patients diagnosed with cUTI at Can Tho General hospital from March 2020 to September 2020. Results: women were 50.7%, patients >60 years old were 60%. The percentage of patients with cUTI who had positive urine culture was 61.3%, E.coli had the highest percentage 65.2%. Regarding the antibiotic resistance, E.coli was high resistant to Amoxicillin, Ciprofloxacin (96.7%) and Cephalosporin (90-93.3%), and was sensitive to Imipenem (80%) and Amikacin (73.3%). Non-E.coli gram-negative agents were moderately sensitive to Imipenem (41.7%) and Amikacin (50%). The overall response rate after treatment was 80%, the average duration of hospital treatment was 8.55±5.38 days. Positive urine culture results and older age were factors associated with poor response in patients. Conclusion: E.coli was the leading cause of cUTI and had a very high rate of antibiotic resistance. The rate of patients who responded poorly to treatment was relatively high.
