Abstract

Background: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a dangerous medical emergency if it is not well followed-up and treated promptly. Therefore, an early diagnosis is essential for follow-up and treatment. Objectives: Describe the clinical, paraclinical features and the treatment outcome with respiratory support methods, symptomatic treatment (pain relief, blood pressure control, laxative, urinary sonde...). Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, conducted on 34 Guillain-Barre patients who were diagnosed and treated at Can Tho Central General Hospital from March 2018 to March 2020. Results: 34 patients were included in the study. It was shown that the typical symptoms were limb weakness and hypo/areflexia. Besides, sensory disturbance was accounting for 82.35%, facial palsy in 26.47% cases, respiratory muscle palsies in 17.65% cases and dysautonomia in 38.24% cases. Paraclinical features: regarding the electromechanical result, the rate of reducing sensory conduction velocity was 82.35% and reducing motor conduction velocity was 61.76%; cerebrospinal fluid result, the value of median cell was 2.5/mm3 and the median protein value was 0.96 g/L. After 3 months from the onset, the rate of sensory recovery was 96.43% and the rate of movement recovery was 91.17%. Conclusion: The severe symptoms as respiratory muscle palsies occurred in 17.65% of patients. Electromyography was mainly manifested by a decrease in the velocity of sensory and motor conduction. After 3 months from the onset, there were 91.17% recovered cases.
