EVALUATING THE PREVALENCE OF HELICOBACTER PYLORI IN PATIENTS WITH GASTRITIS AND DUODENAL ULCERS AT TIEN GIANG CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Evaluating the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with gastritis and duodenal ulcers would greatly benefit the treatment of the infection at Tien Giang Central General Hospital. Objectives: providing the data on the overall rate of Helicobacter pylori infection, and clinical and subclinical characteristics of patients who has been diagnosed with gastritis and duodenal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori. Materials and Methods: Patients were chosen randomly for gastrointestinal examination. 196 biopsy specimens were obtained from gastroduodenal mucosa of patients aged 11–86 (96 (50,5%) females and 97 (49.5%) males). The patients were examined for gastritis and duodenal ulcers. Helicobacter pylori was detected by using In-house CLOtest, Gram stain and culture procedures. Results: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection was 24%. Clinical symptoms: The number of patients suffering from epigastric pain was the highest (72.3%), burning pain in abdomen (68.1%), bloating and indigestion (59.6%), nausea (46.8%), vomiting (17%), belching (23.4%), heartburn (17%). Subclinical features: The number of patients having positive findings with Clo test and Gram stain was equal, at 24%. 17 % had positive findings with Culture. The endoscopic results showed that 91.5% had lesions on both antrum and body of the stomach; 6.4% had lesions on antrum, and 2.1% had lesions on body of the stomach. Conclusions: The three aforementioned tests seem to be unreliable in diagnosing H. pylori, with the number of HP-infected patients with gastritis and duodenal ulcers at Tien Giang Central General Hospital diagnosed by these tests being low. Therefore, patients who had clear symptoms and high-contrast endoscopic images of lesions but their findings were negative are recommended to take another test like multiplex PCR to detect Helicobacter pylori.
