ASSESSMENT OF CORONARY ARTERY AND EXTRACRANIAL CAROTID ARTERY LESIONS IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS WITH CORONARY ARTERY DESEASE AT CAN THO CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a factor for atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Thickening of the endothelium is an early manifestation of atherosclerosis. Objectives: To investigate some factors related to carotid and coronary artery damages. To research the relationship between the severity of carotid artery and coronary artery lesions. Materials and methods: This analytical cross-sectional description was performed in 58 hypertensive patients with coronary artery disease at Can Tho Central General Hospital from 5/2018 to 7/2020. Results: The prevalence of patients with carotid atherosclerosis had over 65 years old were 67.4% and patients had under 65 years old were 32.6%.  The longer duration of hypertension was the thicker carotid intima media (p = 0,001); smoking, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia were associated with increased carotid intima media and the severity of coronary artery disease. The carotid intima media was thicker, the more severe the coronary artery disease. Conclusion: Increased carotid intima media should be viewed as a marker of atherosclerosis, which could predict the severity of coronary artery disease in hypertensive patients.
