OVERVIEW OF DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease affecting the large intestine, increasing worldwide. Nearly 1 million individuals in the United States and Europe are affected by this disease and many more globally. Over a decade, since the publication of the last guideline from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) on this topic, the management of the disease has grown increasingly complex with the availability of additional therapeutic classes. In addition, algorithms for initiating, optimizing, and monitoring response to existing therapies have undergone considerable evolution. Among them are the latest ACG Guidelines 2019 and the update of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology (JSGE) 2020 on the diagnosis and treatment of Ulcerative Colitis. Update according to recommendations to help manage UC, reduce the rate of hospitalization, surgery and cancer complications, and improve the quality of life for patients.
