THE GASTROSCOPIC FINDINGS AND RELATED FACTORS OF THE UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASES IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING GASTROSCOPY AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: The upper gastrointestinal diseases are common in Vietnam and around the world. However, the characterization of gastroscopic findings are significantly different between regions around the world. Therefore, the investigation of gastroscopic findings and related factors supports setting up the pattern of upper gastrointestinal diseases in Can Tho, which helps clinicians clarify these diseases. Objective: To identify the characterizations of gastroendoscopy findings and to investigate some related factors in patients undergoing gastroscopy at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Materials and methods: A retrospective study was conducted in 2697 patients who were above 16 years old and underwent gastroscopy at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during June to December 2019. Results: The common gastroscopic findings were gastritis (85.2%), reflux esophagitis (48.9%), peptic ulcer (6.5%). We found a statistically significant difference in the rate of peptic ulcer, reflux esophagitis, gastroduodenal polyps, and gastric carcinoma between different age groups. In addition, we also identified a statistically significant difference in the rate of gastritis, peptic ulcer, reflux esophagitis, and gastroduodenal polyps between males and females. The percentage of gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric carcinoma were statistically associated with H. pylori infection. Conclusion: Gastritis and reflux esophagitis were common lesions. The factors of age, sex and H. pylori infection were related to upper gastrointestinal diseases.
