NUTRITION STATUS AND SOME RELATED FACTORS IN THE PATIENT WITH GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER WHO HAVE CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENT IN THE ONCOLOGY CENTER, THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Nutrition for patients with gastrointestinal cancer who have chemotherapy and methods to improve nutritional status play an important role in the health care of cancer patients, contributing to reduce the decline weight process in order to improve the resistance and adapt with the chemotherapy, enhance the quality of life, and decrease patient mortality. Objectives: To assess the nutritional status of patients with gastrointestinal cancer who have chemotherapy at Thai Nguyen National Hospital; To identify factors related to the nutritional status of patients with gastrointestinal cancer who have chemotherapy at Thai Nguyen National Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study. To study the nutritional status of patients with gastrointestinal cancer who have chemotherapy and to identify factors related to the nutritional status of these patients. Results: Among 118 gastrointestinal cancer patients who have chemotherapy, 61.9% had a risk of malnutrition or malnutrition according to the PG-SGA; based on BMI, there were 38.1% of patients with malnutrition. There was a difference between the nutritional status of PG-SGA in chemotherapy-treated gastrointestinal cancer patients by age, education level, occupation, type of cancer, treatment method, feeding route, and lifestyle with p <0.05. Conclusion: The findings show that there was a high proportion of chemotherapy-treated patients with gastrointestinal cancer who has a high risk of malnutrition and malnutrition (69.1%). Nurses need to pay more attention to assess the nutritional status of patients before the chemotherapy treatment and give health education to provide nutritional care interventions to enhance the treatment and care effectiveness and improve the quality of life for patients.
