THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN TRANSCUTANEOUS BILIRUBIN AND TOTAL SERUM BILIRUBIN IN NEWBORNS RECEIVING PHOTOTHERAPY AT THE NEONATAL DEPARTMENT OF AN GIANG OBSTETRICS AND PEDIATRICS HOSPITAL

Abstract

  Background: Phototherapy is the first line of therapy for hyperbilirubinemia. Regular monitoring of bilirubin blood during phototherapy is essential. Objective: To evaluate the agreement of transcutaneous bilirubinometer with standard total serum bilirubin measurement in newborns receiving phototherapy. Materials and methods:108 newborns admitted to Neonatology Department of An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital from 1/7 to 31/10/2020. Bilirubin measurement by using Bilicare meter and compared with the measured total bilirubin in plasma.Results: There was a significant correlation between transcutaneous bilirubin and plasma bilirubin before ( r= 0,815, p< 0.001) and after 24 hours of phototherapy (r = 0.843, p <0.001). There was an agreement between transcutaneous bilirubin and plasma bilirubin. Mean value (standard deviation) of the difference and the lower and upper limit of the two methods before and 24h after phototherapy were 10.6 ± 40.9 µmol/L (-69.6 to 90.8 µmol/L) and 10.9 ± 30.9 µmol/L (49.6 to 71.4µmol/Ll). Conclusion: There was a significant agreement between transcutaneous bilirubin and plasma bilirubin before and after phototherapy. Bilicare is convenient, easy-to-use and reliable for monitoring of plasma bilirubin during phototherapy.
